Why is it so hard to sit down and write?
February 7th, 2011

Many newcomers to the writing world expect brilliant writing to be immediate, giving themselves virtually zero room for anything less than stellar writing, but if you talk to seasoned and successful writers you may be surprised to hear that most of their published pieces started out as “crappy writing.” One of the keys seems to be for writers to take the pressure off of themselves to write the perfect piece the first time through. One of the reasons we expect perfection of our first drafts is perhaps that we have heard that writing ability is a gift, either you are born a gifted writer or you are not. Most writers will tell you that good writing does not come through being gifted, but rather through practice, revision, and word crafting. Bottom line? Be kind to yourself. Don’t expect so much. Just sit down and write. Once you have the crappy first draft written you can go back and hammer out the imperfections. Even after that you will find that you will go back to polish and re-polish until your piece shines.
